A New Platform To Reach Staff
This month NZ’s largest scaffolding company, Acrow, launches a new staff communication strategy via video. Aptly named Platform, this quarterly video magazine is hosted by staff for staff.
The construction industry is currently in a boom and experiencing severe shortages of skilled labour. Keeping good staff whilst making sure safety is top of mind, is a key objective for any successful business in this sector.
Recognising a need to evolve their communication, Acrow has developed a sophisticated strategy to talk to their staff. It’s a fresh approach for such a conservative industry. Focused on safety and promoting other key company values, Platform is an authentic down to earth communication which reaches all 400 staff and sub-contractors. The aim is to build a stronger and safer culture within the business.
The concept was to use actual workers and not management to host the videos. After holding auditions amongst the staff, two naturally talented scaffolders were selected. With additional training from actress Maggie Eyre, the hosts of the video, Dan and Arama, carry off a professional and engaging performance with very authentic charm.

Platform, is not just all about business. A musical talent quest adds a compelling section to the videos. Entitled, Acrow’s Got Talent, staff submit amateur performances shot on cell phones. The best one in each episode wins a generous prize from Acrow.
“Response from our staff has been overwhelming. Platform is all about real people and real issues. The issues that matter most to our staff during their daily routines. It's strengthening engagement with management and will assist us in making our workplace safe and more cohesive. I highly recommend this type of communication for any business employing more than a 100 people."
